Politics as usual occupied Cameroon newspaper front pages this week
with the September 30 2013 municipal and legislative elections as the main
focus. While the chronicle examines the confrontations in the legislative
elections in what the paper titles clash of the titans between SDF and CPDM in
the NW, the Scoop announces massive rigging plans put in place by the CPDM and
ELECAM unveiled by the SDF a story the Sun newspaper corroborates with a report
on how SDF’s Chairman Ni John Fru Ndi frowns at power tussles at Elecam. The stories based on a press briefing given by
SDF National chairman present ELECAM as working on CPDM decisions. The watchdog
tribune of Dotta Ezikiel takes interest on the elections governing ELECAM and attempts
answers as to why elecam must be trusted as Cameroonian expects transparent,
credible elections. Like the Horizon, the scoop, the sun, and the chronicle,
the Herald tribune of Richard Nde Lanjong published the list of Candidates for
the municipal and legislative elections for the NW and SW regions. Reports on
the collection of voter cards for the September 30 twin elections are carried
by chronicle and watchdog tribune. While the paper of Eric metomo quotes Dr
Fonkam Azuu for saying that Elecam Director’s Call for people to vote with IDS
was ambiguous, Dotta’s paper reports that those with voters’ card issued by
elecam will not be allowed to vote. And in case of lost one must establish a
certificate of lost which shall be presented on voting day for the concern to
vote. As the decisions of the Supreme Court on petitions are awaited, the
chronicle zooms in and comes out saying that SDF’s parliamentary candidate for
Bafut – Tubah risks disqualification for being an ex-convict following a
petition filled by the CPDM. The chronicle moves to the southwest region to
announce jubilations in TIKO as SDF may be contesting for the council almost
unchallenged then reasons why the SDF did not petition the disqualification of the
FAKO EAST legislative list.
Issues bearing on Cameroon’s history equally feature in
newspapers this week. While the Herald tribune examines unfold facts on how
reunification ruined west Cameroon giant institutions like the tiko, victoria,
ekondo titi ports, marketing board, house of chiefs, amongst others, the
watchdog carries a front page storing announcing the launch of the Southern
Cameroons Antern dubbed freedom land and the currency CUNO ahead of
independence. Dotta’s paper further reports that 79 SCNC members and their
national Chairman Nfor Ngala Nfor are still under detention following their
arrest in Kumbo last July 27. In the article tittle “the untold story why SCNC
leaders, Activists were arrested, tortured, and detained in Kumbo the watchdog
says the meeting that ended in the arrest was aimed at filling vacant positions
in the National Executive Committee NEXCO and to organize a memorial Mass at st
Therese Catholic Cathedral in Kumbo to honor Southern Cameroons Activist who
