Persons living with disabilities within the Bamenda III Municipality have received a lifeline in the form of financial support, as part of efforts by the Bamenda III Council and the Divisional Delegation of Social Affairs to promote social inclusion and enhance their quality of life. The donation, handed out on Thursday 26 June 2025 at the Bamenda III Council premises, is expected to make a difference in the lives of beneficiaries who have long been grappling with the compounded challenges of disability and ongoing regional conflict.
The Mayor of
Bamenda III Council, Fongu Cletus Tanwe presided over the brief but impactful ceremony, offering
words of encouragement alongside financial envelopes tailored to the assessed
needs of each recipient. Most of the beneficiaries were individuals with visual
and mobility impairments, conditions that often hinder access to education,
employment, and public infrastructure especially in times of socio-political
instability.
The
Anglophone crisis, which has plagued the North West and South West regions of
Cameroon since 2016, has further exacerbated the struggles faced by people with
disabilities. Insecurity and economic downturns have made it even more
difficult for them to earn a living, access healthcare, or move freely within
their communities. With limited opportunities and rising costs of living, many
have been pushed to the margins of society.
Against this
backdrop, the Bamenda III Council’s intervention comes as a source of hope.
According to Council officials, the financial support was distributed based on
individual needs assessments carried out in collaboration with the Divisional
Delegation of Social Affairs. This ensures that the assistance is not only
timely but also relevant to the unique circumstances of each beneficiary.
By enabling persons with disabilities to carry out their daily activities with greater ease and confidence, the initiative is expected to bolster self-esteem and foster a stronger sense of independence.
The Mayor reaffirmed the Council’s long-standing commitment to the welfare of persons with disabilities.
“Bamenda III Council continues to prioritise the needs of all its residents, especially the most vulnerable. This is not just a gesture of goodwill but part of our broader vision for a more inclusive and supportive municipality.” the Mayor said. “
In recent
years, the Council has undertaken several initiatives aimed at integrating
persons with disabilities into community life, from improving accessibility to
promoting inclusive education and economic empowerment programmes.
As conflict and hardship persist in the region, such targeted interventions remain essential to ensuring that no one is left behind. The latest donation is not merely a handout, but a step towards breaking the cycle of marginalisation and empowering persons with disabilities to live fuller, more independent lives.
