SDF Reacts to Biya’s Candidacy
Cameroon Decides 2025
The Social Democratic Front (SDF), Cameroon’s leading opposition party, has issued a strong response to President Paul Biya’s declaration that he will seek re-election in the upcoming 12 October presidential election. The SDF described Biya’s decision to run at age 92 as a troubling symbol of leadership stagnation and urged Cameroonians to rally behind what it calls “a credible alternative.”
In a statement released on Sunday, the party expressed alarm at the implications of a new seven-year term for a president who has ruled the country since 1982.
“President Biya’s announcement to run for another term at 92 years old is a stark reminder of the dangers of prolonged leadership. After over 40 years in power, what does this mean for our future?”
The party warned that extending Biya’s mandate would only deepen the country’s structural challenges, citing economic inertia, shrinking civic freedoms, and persistent lack of accountability.
“Another 7 years under the same regime threatens to deepen the crises we face—economic stagnation, limited freedoms, and a lack of accountability. We cannot afford to let history repeat itself.”
Joshua Osih as the alternative
As part of its response, the SDF presented its own candidate, Hon. Joshua Osih, as a source of renewal and change. Osih, Chairman of the party and member of parliament, was officially endorsed earlier this year as the SDF’s flag bearer for the 2025 race.
Describing him as “a dynamic and visionary candidate,” the party said Joshua Osih embodies a leadership style grounded in modern governance, national unity and progressive policy.
“With a commitment to progress and innovation, he represents the change we desperately need.”
Emphasising what it framed as a historic crossroads, the party urged citizens to unite for what it called “a brighter future” and to support a candidate capable of reconnecting with the aspirations of ordinary Cameroonians.
“It’s time to reflect on our nation’s direction. Let’s stand united for a brighter future and choose leadership that truly represents the will of the people. The future of Cameroon is at stake!”
The SDF’s statement was widely shared across social media under hashtags such as #TempsPourLeChangement, #JoshuaOsih, and #LeCamerounMériteMieux, gaining momentum particularly among the youth and diaspora communities.
President Biya’s decision to seek an eighth term has reignited debate over succession, generational inclusion in governance, and the state of Cameroon’s democratic institutions. While his supporters argue that his experience and continuity are vital for national stability, opposition forces insist that meaningful change is only possible through new leadership.
As the official campaign period approaches, all eyes will be on how both the ruling Cameroon People’s Democratic Movement (CPDM) and opposition parties like the SDF mobilise their bases and how citizens respond to what may be one of the country’s most consequential elections in decades.
