SNWOT calls for urgent action on International Women's Day to address plight of women, girls

On this year’s International Women’s Day, the South West North West Women’s Taskforce (SNWOT) has made an impassioned call for urgent action to address the plight of women and girls in Cameroon’s North West and South West regions. The coalition of women-led organisations, represented by its General Coordinator, Andiensa Clotilda Waah, took to the airwaves of CRTV North-West, using the occasion to highlight the harrowing challenges women face amid the protracted armed conflict that has ravaged these regions for over eight years.
“For women and girls in the North West and South West, International Women’s Day is not just a celebration but a poignant reminder of the daily struggles they endure... While women around the world are advocating for equal pay and opportunities, our sisters here are fighting for their very survival.” Andiensa Clotilda Waah stated.

According to a press statement by the General Coordinator of SNWOT, the ongoing conflict has disproportionately affected women and girls, exposing them to extreme violence, displacement, poverty, and trauma. Conflict-related sexual and gender-based violence has become alarmingly prevalent, with devastating consequences on the mental and physical well-being of survivors. Additionally, access to basic rights such as education, healthcare, and economic opportunities remains severely restricted.

SNWOT used the radio platform and the press statement to call on the Cameroonian government to take concrete measures to protect the rights of women and girls in the conflict-hit regions. The coalition also urged both state and non-state armed groups to respect international humanitarian law and immediately halt all forms of violence and intimidation against women.

“We crave the indulgence of all parties to this conflict to respect and protect the rights of women and girls...Their suffering must end.” Andiensa Clotilda emphasised

Dr Eileen Tabuwe Akwo, North West Regional Coordinator of SNWOT, who accompanied Waah alongside other coalition members, reinforced the call for international intervention, stressing the need for targeted humanitarian support.
Despite the grim realities, SNWOT remains steadfast in its mission to empower women, build bridges of peace, and foster equality.

“To the women and girls of the North West and South West regions, we are here for you. Your pain is our pain. Your resilience is our inspiration,” the General Coordinator assured.
With a rallying cry of "Together We Rise," the coalition reaffirmed its commitment to advocating for a brighter, more just, and equitable future for all women and girls, standing in solidarity with those whose voices are often silenced by conflict and suffering.

As the world celebrates International Women’s Day, SNWOT’s message is clear: the plight of women in conflict zones must not be forgotten. Their voices must be heard, and their rights must be upheld.
