Journalists and media professionals in the South region of Cameroon continue to grapple with numerous challenges, ranging from precarious working conditions to limited access to professional training and legal protection. Many media workers operate in an environment marked by job insecurity, inadequate salaries, and increasing pressures that compromise press freedom and ethical journalism. In such a context, a strong and structured trade union is essential to defend their rights, promote professional standards, and ensure collective action against injustices in the media sector.
CJTU leadership in the South region of Cameroon
The Cameroon Journalists' Trade Union (CJTU) stands as the only journalists' and media professionals’ union with national representation, offering a vital platform for advocacy and professional support. In a renewed effort to strengthen its presence in the South region, CJTU successfully organised a Regional Elective General Assembly (REGA) on 6 March 2025 at the Regional Delegation of Communication for the South.
Supervised by Hilaire HAMEKOUE, Secretary General of the National Executive Bureau (NEB), the assembly opened with a training session on trade union action and professional practice, underscoring the need for a united and well-informed media community.
After in-depth discussions and broad consultations among members, a new executive bureau was elected to lead the CJTU South Regional Chapter for a two-year term. The elections took place in the presence of the Regional Delegate for Communication, Mrs Solange BEKO'O B'EVINA.
