Journalists and media professionals in the East region like other parts of Cameroon have long faced major challenges, including limited access to professional development opportunities, precarious working conditions, and growing concerns over press freedom and safety. In a region where media professionals often work under difficult circumstances, the need for a strong, structured union to advocate for their rights and interests has never been more crucial.

The Cameroon Journalists' Trade Union (CJTU), the only journalists’ and media professionals’ union with national representation in Cameroon, has remained at the forefront of efforts to strengthen the profession and provide a unified voice for journalists across the country. In line with its mission, the union successfully organised a Regional Elective General Assembly (REGA) in Bertoua on 28 February 2025 to revitalise its leadership in the East region.
The assembly, held in the conference room of the Regional Delegation of Communication for the East, was supervised by Hilaire HAMEKOUE, Secretary General of the National Executive Bureau (NEB), and Aboubacar DEWA, NEB Adviser. The event featured a training session on trade union action and professional practice, reinforcing the importance of collective action in defending journalists' rights and improving industry standards.
Following extensive discussions, a new Regional Executive Bureau was elected and officially installed in the presence of the Regional Delegate for Communication, Mr NDJANA AYISSI. The newly elected members, who will serve a two-year term, are:
Regional President: Germain ELOUNDOU
Secretary General: Alphonse NGOUANA
Regional Secretary in charge of Communication and Alerts: David MEKOULA
Regional Secretary in charge of Organisation and Trade Union Actions: Isidore AKONLO NGUPA
Treasurer: Clarisse TCHASDI
Auditor: Paul Arthur NDOUMBA
One of the immediate tasks of the new executive bureau is to conduct a media tour across the region to remobilise all journalists and media workers, reinforcing the importance of solidarity in tackling industry challenges. Additionally, a commission has been set up to develop an action plan for 2025, ensuring that the union remains proactive in addressing the pressing concerns of media professionals in the region.
In a statement on behalf of the National Executive Bureau, Loris-Clet ADIANG, National Secretary in charge of Communication and Alerts, reaffirmed the union’s commitment to upholding the rights and security of journalists, emphasising the guiding principle "Let the solidarity of all be the safeguard of each individual's security."
The successful organisation of the East Region Elective General Assembly is a major step towards strengthening CJTU’s presence and impact in the region, providing a renewed sense of unity and direction for journalists and media professionals in their pursuit of professional excellence and workplace security.
