Editorial Commentary: Standing on the Shoulders of Giants

As we celebrate World Poetry Day  this day March 21, 2024, the theme "Standing on the Shoulders of Giants" resonates deeply, especially in regions like the North West Region, specifically in Bamenda, which has been embroiled in an armed conflict for over seven years. Despite the turmoil and challenges faced by the people in our region, poetry continues to be a source of hope and a powerful form of expression for many.

In times of conflict and uncertainty, poetry has the ability to transcend boundaries, bring people together, and provide solace and comfort. On more than one event,, i have watched the poets and spoken word artists in the North West Region, such as Tanni D. Awa aka Motanni, Raiser Njoke, Pen boy, Yembe Nfor, Nubia Nahbila just to name but these , perform. They have been instrumental in using their words to shine a light on the issues plaguing our communities and to give voice to the voiceless.

They have not only kept the flame of poetry alive in the region but have also used their art to raise awareness, advocate for peace, and inspire change. Through their powerful words and performances, they have been able to capture the essence of the struggles and resilience of the people in Bamenda, creating a platform for dialogue and reflection.

It is through the works of these poets that the world can catch a glimpse of the daily realities we go through in the North West Region. Their poetry serves as a mirror reflecting the pain, resilience, and hopes of a community caught in the midst of conflict. They are indeed the giants whose shoulders we stand on today.

As we celebrate World Poetry Day, it is important to recognize and celebrate the contributions of these poets and spoken word artists who continue to use their craft to make a difference in their communities. Their commitment to poetry in the face of adversity is commendable, and their work serves as an inspiration to all aspiring poets and spoken word artists.

Let me urge the younger generation of poets and spoken word aspirants in the North West Region and beyond, to stand on the shoulders of these giants. Learn from their experiences, draw inspiration from their words, and use your own voice to continue the legacy of poetry in your community. Your words have the power to spark change, ignite empathy, and bring healing to those who need it most.

Let us honor the poets and spoken word artists who have paved the way for us, and let us continue to use our words to create a better world for all. May poetry be a source of strength, unity, and hope for the people of our beautiful Bamenda and beyond.
