Inside the Process

Cameroonians head to the polls this morning, with more than eight million voters expected to cast their ballots in a presidential election widely seen as a test of stability for the country.

In Bamenda, capital of the restive North West Region, dawn breaks under a light drizzle after weeks of lockdown and tension. Streets are still quiet at this early hour, but security forces are expected across key junctions as polling stations prepare to open at 8 a.m.

President Paul Biya, 92, seeks to extend his more than four decades in power, facing challengers including Ateki Seta Caxton, Akere Muna, Cabral Libii, Joshua Osih, Hermine Patricia Ndam Njoya, Bello Bouba MaigariIssa Tchiroma Bakary and others.

For many here, beyond politics, the day’s greatest hope is  that the vote unfolds peacefully.

Hilltopvoices is on the ground across North West Region, tracking turnout, incidents, and the mood of the electorate as Cameroon Decides 2025 begins.

What to know

  • Over 8 million registered voters are on the electoral roll. Abroad, Cameroonians can vote in diplomatic/consular missions.
  • Polling stations are clearly listed in advance. Voters should know their polling station and find the register of electors posted ahead of election day.
  • Voter cards are required: without a valid voter card, registered voters can vote with their National Identity cards.

On election day

  • Polls open at 8:00 a.m. and close at 6:00 p.m
  • At the start of voting, the ballot box must be shown to be empty, then locked under supervision
  • Voting is by secret ballot, using uniform  envelopes.

Other measures & regulations

  • National borders are closed 48 hours before polling, and movement of goods and people is banned during election day until voting ends at 6 p.m except for those with special accreditation
  • Polling materials (ballot papers, ballot boxes, booths) are prepared in advance. Each polling station receives its materials, and ELECAM (the electoral authority) ensures readiness
  • The Electoral Code requires that the electoral registers (lists of voters) and lists of polling stations be published in advance so voters know where to go.

Despite a month-long lockdown and persistent uncertainty, election officials say preparations are complete, and the atmosphere remains calm but cautious. Many voters are expected to turn out once polling begins, though movement may be limited in some areas due to security concerns.

Today’s vote will determine whether President Paul Biya  maintains his grip on power after more than four decades, or if Cameroonians will chart a new political course under one of his challengers.
