Former presidential candidate Ateki Seta Caxton has appealed for calm and restraint as vote counting continues across Cameroon following Sunday’s presidential election.

In a statement titled “For the Love of Cameroon,” Ateki Seta urged citizens and political actors to allow the electoral process to unfold peacefully, stressing that “this is a delicate moment that demands responsibility.”

“It was the call of the people that led me to declare my candidacy, and it was that same call that led me to withdraw from the race.. I placed my country before myself.” he said.

Ateki Seta  explained that his decision to step down and support Bello Bouba Maigari of the National Union for Democracy and Progress (UNDP) stemmed from a desire to promote unity within the opposition and offer a collective alternative to the ruling establishment.

Reflecting on emerging trends from the vote count, he said they signal “the people’s aspirations for progress and renewal,” while reminding all sides that the process must be respected.

“This is not a time for further pain... We must act responsibly and ensure that the people’s voice is upheld peacefully.” Ateki Seta cautioned.

He also called on other candidates to show restraint and trust the institutions in charge of compiling and announcing results.

“We must be vigilant, but we must do so peacefully. The future of Cameroon is at stake, and we owe it to the people to ensure their voices are respected.” he added.

Ateki Seta, a former civil society leader who joined electoral politics for the first time, reiterated his belief that “the call of the people is sacred” and should guide the nation through this transition period.

According to the Electoral Code, the Constitutional Council is expected to proclaim official results within 15 days of the election.
