Former presidential candidate and lawyer, Barrister Akere Muna, has described the outcome of Sunday’s election as “a new dawn” for Cameroon, urging authorities to respect what he calls the “clear and resounding voice of the people.”

In a statement released on Monday, Barrister Akere Muna who backed Bello Bouba Maigari during the campaign said early trends from the polls indicate that Cameroonians have “spoken with a voice that is undeniable,” calling on all institutions to “align with the people’s mandate.”

“It is imperative that they immediately align with the people’s mandate.. The ultimate measure of your legacy, Mr President, will be defined not only by how long you governed but by the wisdom with which you heed the people’s voice.” Akere Muna said.

The respected barrister appealed directly to incumbent President Paul Biya, urging him to “cede power peacefully” if the results confirm a change in leadership, saying such an act would mark him as “a true patriot who prioritised national unity and democratic principles.”

Akere Muna also extended an olive branch to other opposition contenders, calling for calm and collective responsibility in preserving peace and stability during the sensitive post-election period.

“This is a pivotal test of our democracy. The world is watching. Let us choose peace, progress, and respect for the sovereign will of the people.” he wrote.

As Cameroonians await official results from the Constitutional Council, Akere Muna’s message reflects growing calls from political and civil society actors for transparency, restraint, and respect for the electoral process.
