Mile 4 Nkwen bridge opens to traffic after rare rapid three-month reconstruction

In an uncommon display of efficiency and determination, the Mile 4 Nkwen Bridge in Bamenda III Subdivision, North West Region of Cameroon, has been reconstructed and opened to vehicular traffic in just under three months. This is a feat that stands out in a country where public infrastructure projects are often synonymous with delay and abandonment.

A recent image taken at the site by Hilltopvoices shows cars already crossing the new structure, flanked by ongoing finishing touches, loose gravel and heavy machinery still stationed nearby. The newly-built bridge, supported by solid concrete walls, has restored a major transport link that connects Bamenda to key areas of the region including Ngoketunjia, Boyo, Bui, and Donga-Mantung Divisions.

Construction of the bridge began in early February 2025 under the supervision of Edge Construction Company. At the time, there was widespread concern among residents that the upcoming rainy season typically beginning in March would stall or even derail the project. True to expectation, the rains came, but unlike many projects across the country, work did not grind to a halt. Instead, the construction team pressed on through the downpours, navigating technical and environmental challenges to ensure steady progress.
The result is a structure that is not only operational within record time, but one that promises safer and more reliable connectivity for thousands of commuters and business people who had previously been forced to endure seasonal cut-offs due to the flooded Nkie-Mufeh stream.

This must be very fulfilling for the Mayor of the Bamenda III Council Fongu Cletus Tanwe who had made several efforts to ensure commuters use the bride with little or difficulties at all times.
“This is unlike anything we are used to. Usually, when they announce projects like this, we expect years of delay and unfinished work. But this time, they delivered and fast,” Muma, a taxi driver whose daily route passes through the bridge reacted to Hilltopvoices

While finishing work such as paving, drainage and side protection is still underway, the bridge is already in use, a clear sign of its structural integrity and the confidence of its builders. Its timely completion should serve as both a blueprint and a benchmark for similar projects across the country.
No official statement has been made about the bridge.
