The 2026 edition of the Bamenda III Council Inclusive Royal Tournament got underway on Sunday 19 July 2026 in Nkwen in an atmosphere of excitement and community celebration as Mayor Fongu Cletus Tanwe and the Divisional Officer for Bamenda III Subdivision attended the tournament's opening ceremony for the first time, underlining the growing importance of an initiative that has become a cornerstone of youth engagement during the long school holidays.
Unlike previous editions where both officials traditionally attended only the grand finale, their presence at the opening ceremony signalled renewed institutional support for a tournament that continues to promote youth empowerment, social inclusion and community development through sport.
They were joined by German water engineer Marvin, currently in Bamenda III to carry out feasibility studies for the Bambui and Nkwen water supply projects, reflecting the partnership between the municipality and its German collaborators beyond infrastructure development.
In keeping with tournament tradition, the ceremonial kick-off was performed by the Deputy Mayor of Bamenda III Council alongside Engineer Marvin, officially setting the competition in motion before an enthusiastic crowd of football lovers, community members and young people.
The opening fixture saw runners-up for last year, Bayelle FC, make an emphatic statement with a commanding 3-0 victory over tournament debutants Mbefi FC.
Mael Dinjeka opened the scoring before Brave Mbakwa doubled Bayelle's advantage. Awasung Emmanuel sealed the victory with the third goal, giving Bayelle FC the perfect start to their quest for the title this year.
Beyond the football, the Inclusive Royal Tournament continues to fulfil a broader social mission. Organised during the long school holidays, the competition provides hundreds of young people with a constructive platform to remain actively engaged, develop their sporting talents and build friendships while staying away from negative influences often associated with idle holiday periods.
Over the years, Mayor Fongu Cletus has consistently championed the vision of making the tournament truly inclusive by creating opportunities for every community to participate regardless of background or ability. The tournament, held this year under the theme "youth at the heart of inclusion and community development," reflects the Council's belief that sport is a powerful vehicle for strengthening social cohesion, promoting peaceful coexistence and nurturing the next generation of community leaders.
To further improve the quality of the competition, rehabilitation works on the playing pitch ahead of the tournament took place, providing participants with a safer and more suitable playing surface while enhancing the overall experience for players and spectators alike.
Action resumes on Wednesday, 22 July, with another exciting round of fixtures featuring TiperPark FC of Nchang Quarter, Niboung FC, Sunday Sharp FC of Ntene Ntene and Ngweh Ngweh FC of Mile 5 as the race for the championship gathers momentum.
