The 54th edition of Cameroon’s National Day celebration in Fonfuka, headquarters of Bum Subdivision in Boyo Division, was marked by an impressive turnout, vibrant participation, and renewed community spirit as hundreds of residents gathered to commemorate the national event in a colourful atmosphere.
CPDM militants marching pass the grand stand
Among the political parties that took part in the celebration, the Boyo IV Section of the ruling Cameroon People’s Democratic Movement (CPDM) clearly emerged as the most visible and organised force during the march past. Dressed in party campaign fabrics and displaying strong mobilisation capacity, CPDM militants stole the spotlight with a participation that overwhelmingly surpassed that of the opposition parties present at the event.
The National Union for Democracy and Progress (NUDP), associated with Belo Buba Maigari, also made a notable appearance and maintained a respectable level of participation. However, observers noted that the party’s presence was less overwhelming compared to the previous year’s celebration, where it had drawn significant attention.
Other political parties equally answered present during the commemorative event. The United Democratic Party (UDP) of Chairman Elhadj Lawan Bako marched alongside supporters, while the Social Democratic Front (SDF), led nationally by Hon. Joshua Osih, also registered its presence during the ceremonial parade. Their participation contributed to the pluralistic political atmosphere that characterised the celebration.
Beyond politics, the event witnessed a remarkable increase in the participation of educational institutions. Nursery, primary, and secondary schools turned out massively, with pupils and students marching in disciplined formations before administrative authorities, traditional rulers, and members of the public.
Administrator at the event groundSources close to the organisers attributed the increased school attendance to the gradual return to normalcy in Bum Subdivision following years of instability linked to the ongoing socio-political crisis in the North West Region. The crisis had forced many families to flee the area, leading to a significant disruption in school activities and public gatherings. The encouraging turnout this year was therefore interpreted by many residents as a sign of resilience and progressive recovery within the locality.
The atmosphere at the ceremonial ground remained lively throughout the event as spectators applauded the different contingents that marched past. The presiding officer, Walter Tumassang, visibly expressed satisfaction and excitement as he stood repeatedly to cheer participants during the parade. His enthusiasm reflected the general mood of optimism that dominated the celebration.
Cultural displays also added colour and excitement to the occasion. Pupils and students thrilled the audience with traditional songs and performances delivered to the rhythm of drum beats, showcasing raw talent and preserving local cultural heritage. The performances drew admiration from guests and residents alike.
One of the highlights of the cultural segment was the appearance of the Paramount Fon of Bum, who delighted the crowd with a performance of the royal dance. His participation symbolised unity, cultural pride, and the enduring importance of traditional authority within the community.
Overall, the 54th National Day celebration in Fonfuka not only showcased political mobilisation and cultural richness but also reflected a growing sense of hope and gradual stability returning to Bum Subdivision.
