Workers of Bamenda I, II, III and the Bamenda City Council allege that they have been paid under a lower salary structure since the 2024 government wage adjustment, despite previously benefiting from the 2014 salary scale.
They say they have spent nearly two years seeking restoration of the former scale and that a court subsequently ruled in their favour. The workers, however, allege that the ruling has not been implemented by the authorities in charge.
They further allege intimidation of council authorities and staff representatives and claim that an audit team has been dispatched to examine the financial situation of the affected councils. Staff delegates are reportedly expected to meet the Governor of the North West Region.
The workers are demanding an independent investigation, implementation of the court ruling and intervention by competent authorities.
The dispute comes as the Ministry of Finance reportedly investigates Bamenda I, II, III and the Bamenda City Council over alleged financial irregularities, salary payment difficulties, rejection of personnel files and public resource management. The investigation team was expected to submit its findings to the Minister of Finance on 12 August 2026.
The allegations made by the workers could not be independently verified, and the officials concerned have not yet publicly responded.
The unfolding developments have renewed calls for transparency and accountability in the management of council resources and workers' salaries.
