Journalists confront ethics, safety and money as the region’s first media forum tackles the hardest questions facing the press.

The maiden North West Media Forum opened this Thursday, 15 January 2025, in Bamenda with tough conversations on hate speech, working conditions, safety, and the struggle to keep media houses alive.

Panel three

The first panel, moderated by Nimpa Francis, brought together Fung John, Mbuh Stella, Muma Jude and Clenince Ayombong.

The discussion focused on hate speech and xenophobia, especially in an election year, and how journalists can counter these dangers through responsible reporting and ethical practice.

Panel one

The second panel, led by Maikem Emmanuella, featured Omer Songwe, Wanchia Cynthia, George Etoh and Charles Tembei.

Drawing from real life experiences in the North West, panelists described the harsh realities of working in a conflict affected region, where fear, pressure and limited resources shape daily journalism.

Panel two

In Plenary Session Two, discussions turned to the general condition of the media in the North West. Journalists spoke openly about poor pay, unsafe working environments and constant risk in the field. Despite these challenges, panelists urged reporters to remain professional and ethical. Media owners were also challenged to find sustainable ways to generate income and pay staff better, with the message that welfare directly affects the quality of journalism.

The third panel, on the Economic Viability of the Media, examined falling advertising revenues, changing audiences and digital disruption.

Moderated by Ruth Che Wachong, with panelists Nde Richard Lajong, Anyi Collins, Ndi Tsembom Elvis, Bassang Victory and Abongwa Fozo, the session explored new business models including community funding, subscriptions, donor partnerships and social enterprise.

The fourth panel shifted focus to Entrepreneurial and Ethical Journalism in Precarious Environments. Moderated by Tamaji Emmanuel, with Odette Nchanji, Jato Richard and Maikem Emmanuella as panelists, the discussion highlighted innovation as a way to protect editorial independence while surviving financially.
