The newly inaugurated 690 million FCFA emergency centre at the Bamenda Regional Hospital has been hailed as a tangible demonstration of decentralised governance and regional-led development in Cameroon’s North West Region.
Speaking during the inauguration ceremony on Saturday, Dr. Nsame Denis, Director of the hospital, said the project comes as a timely response to the growing number of emergency cases handled by the institution.
The President of the North West Regional Assembly, who also chairs the hospital’s management board, Prof. Fru Angwafo III, described the facility as a “symbol of what regional governance can deliver when communities lead their own development.” He said the project aligns with the Special Status framework, which empowers regional structures to design and execute context-specific solutions.
The new emergency centre boasts over 25 beds, advanced imaging and diagnostic units, operating theatres, a burn treatment centre, and specialised spaces for paediatric and obstetric emergencies. Designed to stabilise critical patients within 72 hours, the facility quadruples the hospital’s previous capacity to handle emergencies.
Highlighting broader development strides, Prof. Fru Angwafo noted that the Regional Assembly has so far completed 302 cash-for-work initiatives, 242 public investment projects, and established key institutions including the North West Development and Investment Fund, a digital innovation hub, and the region’s first economic forum.
He reaffirmed the Assembly’s commitment to national unity while stressing that “regional empowerment is the future of effective governance.”
