In an uncommon show of recognition and appreciation that punctuated the Elective General Assembly of the Cameroon Journalists’ Trade Union (CJTU) North West Chapter, six journalists were honoured with Certificates of Acknowledgement by the Union’s National Executive Bureau.
The symbolic gesture, delivered on behalf of National President Marion Obam, was presented by Choves Loh, National Adviser, and Bakah Derick, First Vice President in charge of International Relations, during the event held in Bamenda on Thursday 5 June 2025.
The certificates, rich in praise, lauded the recipients for their “steadfast dedication, commendable commitment, and meaningful contributions to the advancement” of the Union in the region. The act of recognition was as much about merit as it was about inspiring a culture of professional solidarity.
Nji Ignatius, outgoing chapter president and North West Bureau Chief of The Eden Newspaper, was among those honoured. Since the chapter’s inception in 2019, he has been instrumental in promoting CJTU’s image and ensuring its operational sustainability. His media platform has consistently served as a vehicle for Union visibility.
Ambe Macmillan A, the outgoing treasurer, was praised for his impeccable financial record-keeping and bridge-building efforts with other media bodies in the region. His commitment has been a quiet force behind the Union’s cohesion.
Newly elected chapter president Ruth Che Wachong, formerly Secretary for Communications and Alerts, was also recognised. A founding member, Ruth has demonstrated uncommon devotion and has been a strong role model for female journalists in the Union. The Communications Assistant at the North West Development Authority (MIDENO) and reporter at Upfront brings to her new role the same energy that earned her the certificate and the trust of her peers.
Melanie Ndefru, the outgoing secretary and now Secretary for Communications and Alerts, was acknowledged for her uninterrupted dedication to the chapter. A communications officer at the Public Independent Conciliator’s office and reporter with Civiclens, Melanie has been a steady communicator and organiser.
Ngong Song Jean Marie, the newly elected Secretary General, received recognition for his efforts to bridge academia and trade unionism. His push to involve journalism students in Union life has broadened CJTU’s reach and future relevance. The PhD candidate is also a freelance correspondent for DW and a university radio operator.
The most senior honouree, Choves Loh, has played a key advisory role since the chapter's creation. A respected editor and retired SOPECAM journalist, his enduring leadership and mentorship continue to shape the Union’s path.
Speaking during the ceremony, Bakah Derick reminded attendees that the certificates, though symbolic, carry profound meaning.
“We may not have gold medals or deep pockets, but we have gratitude. These certificates are a sincere expression of appreciation from the National Bureau. They are not just documents they are a reminder that your efforts matter.” Bakah Said
At a time when the journalism profession faces immense pressure, this act of recognition was a reaffirmation that commitment, though often behind the scenes, does not go unnoticed. The CJTU North West Chapter moves forward with renewed purpose, grounded in the values of service, unity, and professional integrity.
