COVID-19: NW Administrators talk prevention with a conflict swayed population

By Bakah Derick in Bamenda

Regional and municipal administrators in the North West Region have for the past days been involved in meetings and other actions with the objective of stepping up preventive measures against the Coronavirus pandemic.

Returning to his area of command from a meeting with his territorial administration boss, the Regional Governor Lele L'Afrique Adolph was on a tour of strategic and potential transmission locations on Tuesday March 31, 2020.

In full protective gear, (a plastic head cap, plastic suit and a face mask, the administrator visited Matazem main gateway into the region, travel agencies, markets and the regional hospital expected to be the treatment center for confirm cases.

He will congratulate health officials where they worked but expressed concerns over the sale of hydro-alcoholic hand sanitizers of doubtful quality.

Bamenda city Mayor on his part has announced a disinfection of the city markets and other areas on Friday April 3, 2020; a day he expects everywhere to be closed. "This is our city, and if we should be quarantined in the nearest future, let the city be clean." The Mayor Tembeng Paul Achombong said. He is hoping on the benevolence of business persons and institution to realise this project.

No case has been reported in the region as at March 31, 2020

The Opinion

The prevention campaign is against a helpless population whose way of life has been transformed by a three years old armed conflict. In Sierra Leone during the Ebola crisis, peace builders were at the center of action playing an important role in building trust for intervention in communities whose experience of the conflict had left them with no trust in the State or its health interventions.

It is thus necessary for combined messaging to be done by local and international peace builders who are trusted in local communities to navigate lack of trust.
In seemingly  peaceful Northern Ireland, disagreement over when the power-sharing government should implement COVID-19 measures, took on a conflict hue, as Irish nationalist parties pushed for similar timing to the Republic of Ireland, while Unionist parties awaited the response of the British government. It is certain that there is still a visible presence of loyalty to a group that gives others on the opening and closing of business facilities in the region. What if they have a different opinion to government measures, surely the swayed population will have a lot to battle with at once.

My conclusion: it will be at the interest of the population to consider any action that protects their health than any other that justifies political intentions
