Football actors in the North West Region will receive increased financial rewards under the fifth edition of the Fongod's Man of the Match initiative, with the cash prize rising from FCFA 20,000 to FCFA 30,000 for the 2026/2027 football season.
The decision, taken by the promoter, Ba Nkom Fongod Edwin Nuvaga, is aimed at raising the competitive level of football in the region while improving the social and financial recognition of players, coaches and supporters who contribute to the success of their teams.
Under the revised arrangement, only actors from teams that win their matches will qualify for recognition and the accompanying cash reward. The initiative will continue to recognise outstanding performances during home matches involving North West teams in the Elite One and Elite Two championships.
Ba Nkom Fongod Edwin has also extended the scope of the project to cover selected outstanding performers during the Regional Football Championship and a number of holiday tournaments that attract large crowds and promote social interaction and peaceful coexistence in communities.
The initiative was conceived to promote football in the North West Region, encourage sporting talent and give visibility to individuals who distinguish themselves during competitive matches. It recognises outstanding players, coaches and fan clubs, with the selection entrusted to a jury made up of selected sports journalists. Senior Sports analyst Choves Loh serves as Project Manager.
Fongod Edwin Nuvaga, popularly associated with football promotion in the region, is the Director General of Cameroon Customs. He hails from Bali Nyongha in Mezam Division of the North West Region and joined the Customs Administration in 1989 after graduating from the National School of Administration and Magistracy (ENAM). He previously served as Head of the North West Customs Sector from 2002 to 2005.
His involvement in football promotion in the region dates back several years. In December 2022, he launched the Man of the Match initiative with an initial cash reward of FCFA 10,000, targeting North West teams competing in the Elite One championship. He also supported efforts to improve the fortunes of PWD Bamenda, including backing the acquisition of a team bus.
With the latest increase to FCFA 30,000, the fifth edition of the initiative raises the financial incentive for outstanding football performances while extending recognition to more competitions and community-based tournaments across the region.
