Alliance Française Bamenda, in partnership with the Organization for Women’s Empowerment and Development (OWED), is organising a two-day breast cancer awareness campaign in Bamenda on 13 and 14 October 2026.
The campaign, tagged Pink October 2026, is being held under the theme, “every story is unique, every journey matters”. It seeks to raise awareness of breast cancer, encourage early detection and provide public education on health and wellbeing.
The programme begins on Tuesday, 13 October, with a solidarity walk scheduled for 7 am at the Esplanade of the Mezam Senior Divisional Officer’s Office at Up Station, Bamenda. The walk is intended to mobilise community support and draw attention to the importance of breast cancer awareness.
Activities continue on Wednesday, 14 October, with a Pink Education and Cultural Event at the Alliance Française Bamenda hall.
The educational sessions will address the power of early detection, mental health and breast cancer, and nutrition and lifestyle choices for longevity. Participants will also receive demonstrations on breast self-examination to help them recognise unusual changes and understand when to seek medical advice.
The programme will further explore the emotional challenges associated with breast cancer, including the need for psychological support for people diagnosed with the disease and their families.
Female artists will contribute to the event through spoken word, poetry, music and traditional dance. The performances are intended to complement the health education sessions and provide a cultural platform for women to share messages of awareness and solidarity.
Breast cancer awareness campaigns are commonly organised in October, internationally recognised as Breast Cancer Awareness Month. The World Health Organization identifies early diagnosis and timely access to appropriate treatment as important elements in reducing the impact of the disease.
Breast self-examination can help women become familiar with their bodies and notice changes, but it does not replace recommended screening or medical assessment. Unusual lumps, changes in breast shape, skin changes or abnormal nipple discharge should be assessed by a qualified health professional.
Through Pink October 2026, the Alliance Française Bamenda and OWED are using health education and cultural activities to encourage informed conversations about breast cancer and the importance of seeking medical care promptly.
