The Association for the Promotion of Women’s Rights and Peace Building (AP-WORP) is launching a project in Bamenda III Subdivision to help survivors of gender-based violence (GBV) rebuild their lives through psychosocial support and economic empowerment.
The project, titled restoring dignity through PSS and economic empowerment to survivors of GBV in Bamenda III Subdivision, targets 30 survivors and seeks to address both the psychological consequences of violence and the economic vulnerabilities that can make recovery difficult.
Its launch on Tuesday, 13 October, brings together about 50 invited participants, including administrative authorities, partners, civil society representatives and project participants.
The economic empowerment component is particularly significant in a context where financial dependence and poverty can limit survivors’ ability to leave abusive situations, access essential services and regain independence.
At a high-level regional dialogue organised by AP-WORP in Bamenda on 24 September, Executive Director Munteh Florence Chea stressed the importance of economic rehabilitation and reintegration for survivors. She also called for a coordinated response that would enable survivors to access protection, psychosocial care and justice without being left to navigate fragmented services alone.
The new initiative is expected to translate some of these concerns into targeted support for survivors in Bamenda III. Its two main components are psychosocial support and economic empowerment, with activities scheduled for implementation in the subdivision.
The launch programme includes a presentation of the project objectives, target group, activities and timeline, followed by the presentation and discussion of baseline survey findings covering participants’ socio-demographic profiles, psychosocial wellbeing, safety and protection concerns, access to services, livelihoods, skills needs and priorities.
The baseline findings are expected to inform implementation by helping stakeholders understand the circumstances and needs of the intended beneficiaries.
The programme also includes a stakeholder commitment session in which participants will specify what support they can provide, the timelines for delivery and how progress will be followed up. The commitments will be publicly declared.
By linking psychosocial recovery with economic empowerment, AP-WORP is seeking to address not only the immediate effects of gender-based violence but also some of the practical barriers that can prevent survivors from rebuilding their lives with dignity and greater independence.
