The Cameroon Journalists’ Trade Union (CJTU) has retained its seat within the leadership of the International Federation of Journalists (IFJ) following the re-election of Marion Obam, the National President to the organisation’s Executive Committee during the 32nd IFJ World Congress held in Paris from 4 to 7 May 2026.
Delegates at the congress
Marion Obam emerged among the strongest performers in the election, securing 74.70 per cent of the votes cast and obtaining the backing of 189 delegations out of 249 voting countries and organisations. The result consolidates the visibility of CJTU within global journalism and trade union structures.
The congress, which also marked the centenary of the IFJ founded in 1926, brought together more than 160 journalists’ unions and associations from across the world under the theme: “100 years of international solidarity for strong journalism and trade unionism.”
Delegates examined growing challenges facing the profession, including threats to press freedom, the impact of artificial intelligence on journalism, safety concerns in conflict zones, editorial independence, and gender equality within media organisations.
The re-election of Marion Obam is being viewed within CJTU as recognition of the union’s increasing role in international advocacy on media freedom and labour rights. Over recent years, the union has strengthened its international engagement through participation in IFJ structures, campaigns for journalists’ protection, and advocacy for improved working conditions within Cameroon’s media sector.
Marion Obam and incoming President
Marion Obam will serve alongside newly elected IFJ President Zuliana Lainez as the federation begins its second century amid mounting global concern over attacks on journalists and democratic freedoms.
In a statement issued after the congress, CJTU described the outcome as “a brilliant victory for the CJTU, for Cameroon and for Africa in the service of global journalism.”
