German Chancellor Friedrich Merz declared on Friday that Germany would immediately dispatch €29 million (approx. US$34 million) for humanitarian aid in Gaza, following the Israeli government’s ratification of a ceasefire agreement with Hamas.
Omar Mukhtar Street in February 2025“We are providing €29 million for humanitarian aid. Together with Egypt, we will convene a reconstruction conference for Gaza,” Merz said in a post on X (formerly Twitter). He also signalled Germany’s willingness to take a more active role in the peace initiative put forward by U.S. President Donald Trump.
Merz clarified that although Germany would not commit militarily to Gaza, it would support diplomatic and reconstruction efforts. Analysts note that Germany has already paused certain arms exports to Israel pending the developments in Gaza.
The reconstruction plan envisaged by Merz, to be co-hosted with Egypt, aims to rebuild vital infrastructure and restore essential services across Gaza.
