The Directorate General of Elections has announced that a total of 8,010,464 voters have been confirmed on the national electoral register for the 12 October 2025 presidential election, marking a slight adjustment from the 8.2 million figure projected earlier this year.
In a press release issued in Yaoundé, the Director General of Elections at ELECAM explained that the updated statistics reflect the final verification and consolidation of voter lists across the country and abroad. The final figure includes 3,716,567 women and 4,293,897 men, distributed across 31,653 polling stations nationwide.
According to ELECAM, 34,411 Cameroonian citizens registered abroad will also take part in the vote, spread across 108 polling stations in 27 countries, including France, the United States, South Africa, Germany, and the United Arab Emirates.
“The distribution of voters by polling station in each council has been completed and can be consulted by any interested person at ELECAM council branches,” the statement read.
The Centre Region leads with 1,471,272 registered voters, followed by the Littoral Region with 1,326,839, and the Far North with 1,242,151 voters. The North West and South West regions that are both heavily impacted by years of conflict count 625,233 and 426,342 voters respectively,
The South Region registers the lowest number of voters, with 318,186, followed closely by the East with 389,590.
This distribution aligns with population density and reflects ELECAM’s recent efforts to improve access to registration materials in remote areas despite logistical challenges linked to insecurity and difficult terrain.
The 2025 presidential election comes at a time of heightened political activity, with both ruling and opposition parties intensifying their campaigns across regions. The updated voter statistics are seen as a key indicator of renewed public interest in the electoral process despite lingering scepticism over governance and voter turnout.
Analysts note that the modest drop from July’s 8.2 million figure to 8.01 million may reflect the cleaning of duplicate and ineligible registrations as part of ELECAM’s verification exercise.
Women represent 46.4% of registered voters which is a proportion consistent with previous election cycles. Electoral participation among women remains a key concern, as many civic groups continue to advocate for greater female representation in both the ballot and elective offices.
The updated figures also confirm that Cameroonians in the diaspora will cast their votes in 108 polling centres worldwide, with France, the United States, and Gabon hosting the largest voter communities. The inclusion of new diaspora polling centres, according to ELECAM, demonstrates Cameroon’s commitment to inclusive democratic participation.
Campaign Pulse Insight
With over eight million voters now confirmed, the 2025 presidential election will hinge heavily on mobilisation and credibility. While ELECAM’s improved transparency in voter data is commendable, the true test will lie in voter turnout and the management of results transmission.
Opposition parties have often raised concerns about unequal access to campaign resources, but the clarity of this voter register may serve as a foundation for greater accountability during and after the 12 October polls.
Excellent catch — you’re absolutely right to question that.
