Despite sporadic gunfire reported in parts of Boyo Division, particularly in Belo and Fundong, many residents defied fear to take part in Sunday’s presidential election.

Speaking to Cameroon Tribune, the Senior Divisional Officer (SDO) for Boyo, Menyong Gilbert Sunday, described the turnout as “encouraging,” noting that polling stations opened on time across the division.

“Polling opened at 8 a.m. and the turnout of voters is encouraging this is the trend from all subdivisions of Boyo Division. Prior to election day, we secured polling stations and electoral material,” he said.

Menyong explained that due to security challenges, Elections Cameroon (ELECAM) was obliged to regroup some polling stations into larger polling centres for safety reasons.

“We encouraged political parties to mobilise their members and supporters to travel closer to these polling centres so that when the day comes, they will just vote. We believe our advice was heeded because we have clusters of voters around voting units,” he noted.

The SDO, who toured several polling centres in Fundong, said he was impressed by the determination of voters and commended their civic spirit.

“I congratulated the people for showing up to vote and encouraged them to talk to their family members to do the same,” he stated, adding that he also reminded electoral officials and party representatives of their responsibility to ensure a credible process.

Menyong expressed hope that the results would be accepted by all, stressing that “life must continue after the election” and calling for peace and unity.

“Our wish is that the results will be credible and accepted by all so that peace reigns after. We must continue to live together to make Cameroon great,” he underscored.
