The Social Democratic Front (SDF) has confirmed that its presidential candidate, Hon. Joshua Osih, will launch his campaign in Bamenda on Saturday, 27 September 2025, ahead of the 12 October presidential election.
Mayor Fongu Cletus Tanwe talking to journalistsThe announcement was made at the end of an enlarged regional executive meeting of the party held in Bamenda on Saturday, 20 September. The meeting, chaired by Regional Chairperson Mayor Fongu Cletus Tanwe, agreed that Bamenda was the natural choice for the launch, given its status as the birthplace of the SDF.
“Everybody decided during the last national executive committee that the SDF was going to launch its campaign in Bamenda, the birthplace of the party. This meeting is in preparation for that launch. Within this framework, we are calling on all the living forces of the North West Region to mobilise, listen to the beautiful messages, and embrace the plans the SDF has for the North West and the nation as a whole,” Mayor Fongu declared.
The Regional Chairperson stressed that the SDF was mobilising agents to represent the party at polling stations, in line with electoral regulations, to guarantee transparency and fairness during the election. He urged voters to come out massively and support Osih, emphasising that the SDF remains the best-placed party to address the Anglophone crisis.
Fongu further explained that Bamenda’s symbolic importance goes beyond politics.
“We took into consideration the security situation of the North West. But more importantly, Bamenda is the birthplace of the Social Democratic Front. When you want to embark on serious business, you first go to your father’s tomb to pay homage and seek blessings. That is our African tradition,” he said.
A key resolution of the meeting was the appointment of a regional campaign team, with Mayor Fongu as regional chairman and Yong Emmanuel as campaign manager.
Speaking after his appointment, Mr Yong expressed confidence in the team’s ability to carry the campaign across the North West despite the crisis context.
Yong Emmanuel, SDF campaign manager“The strategies we have put in place are not for public consumption, but they are very important and solid. The North West is not new to me. I have worked here before during the peak of the crisis and even now as tensions simmer. We are determined, committed, and courageous. Nothing will stop us from achieving the task assigned to us by the party hierarchy,” he stated.
The SDF, traditionally strong in the North West, hopes to use the Bamenda launch to galvanise its base and set the tone for a vigorous campaign across the country.
