Cameroon Armed Conflict: NW regional assembly to meet at last

By Nfor Nkfu

The North West Regional House of Assembly has been convened for an extraordinary session to hold in Bamenda from June 1st to June 3rd 2021.

Prof Fru Angwafor

Going by a release signed by the Regional Executive Council President Prof Fru Angwafor, all members of the House of Divisional Representatives, House of Chiefs and Members of parliament from the region are expected to attend the opening session on June 1st at Assmbly's building.

Though the agenda of the session has not been disclosed, discussions to run  for three days are likely to centre on the budget of the region which will empower the council to begin work.

No developmental activity has so been carried out by the decentralised body since being installed into office on January 23, 2021 for lack of budget.

Officials have in the past complained of stifling by the central government. Sources say power and resources are yet to be devolved to region from the central level.

The first session of the Council dedicated to the putting in place of a bureau took place on December 22, 2020 followed by installation on January 23rd 2021.

The regional executive Council was put in place last year as result of the Major national dialogue held to look for ways of ending the now five years running armed conflict in the region.

Owing to historical past, North West and South West regions were accorded a Special Status within the context of decentralisation as a government thought solution to the conflict.

The weight of the "Special status" is yet to be felt by the grassroots in terms of development.
