Admission into the National Higher Polytechnic Institute (NAHPI) of the University of Bamenda is strictly merit-based, with the institution admitting only the best-performing candidates, its Director, Prof. Fidelis Cho Ngwa, has reiterated.
“We admit just the best of the best into this prestigious school of engineering,” Prof. Cho Ngwa declared on Thursday, October 22, 2026, during an academic orientation for freshmen held in the newly constructed amphitheatre, which accommodates more than 800 people. The Director equally said NAHPI is the only school on UBa campus that train Engineers. The other schools train but technicians and graduates from NAHPI are not only qualified but are readily accepted globally as qualified and certified Engineers.
Addressing the newly admitted students, the Director said academic excellence requires hard work, discipline and regular attendance at lectures. He urged them to take their studies seriously and validate all courses, noting that students who attend lectures consistently tend to perform better academically.
Emphasising NAHPI’s culture of excellence, Prof. Cho Ngwa challenged the students to aim for First Class honours, which he described as a gateway to greater opportunities.
“If you graduate with First Class honours, even doors of Heaven would be open to you,” he said simply reiterating power of first class honours.
The Director disclosed that practical training in industries and workshops would constitute a significant component of the students’ programmes. Engineering students would also use laboratories outside the institution, including facilities at Government Technical High School (Canada) in Bamenda. Mining students would undertake laboratory practicals in Douala, while those studying biochemical sciences would carry out practical work in the West Region.
Prof. Cho Ngwa further advised prospective NAHPI applicants to build a strong foundation in science subjects, particularly Mathematics, Further Mathematics, Physics, Biology and Chemistry.
He also cited international scholarship opportunities available to outstanding students, disclosing that three students from the Electrical Engineering Department were set to travel to Canada on scholarship.
While commending the government for investing in new infrastructure at the institution, the Director called for additional facilities, modern laboratories and state-of-the-art equipment to enhance teaching and learning.
His message to the freshmen was clear: academic success at NAHPI demands commitment, discipline and an uncompromising pursuit of excellence.
