Bamenda III Council Mayor Fonguh Cletus Tanwe has been recognised by the Cameroon English Language Newspaper Publishers Association (CENPA) for his efforts to improve basic services and infrastructure in the municipality.
Mayor Fongu Cletus received the 2026 CENPA Award for Best North West Mayor during the association’s awards night at the GECAM Hall in Bonanjo, Douala. The award certificate cited his role in “driving localised development through the execution of clean water projects, road construction & market infrastructure upgrades in the Bamenda III Municipality.”
The award was presented during a CENPA organised event in Douala.
CENPA President Kristian Ngah Christian said the awards were intended to recognise individuals and institutions whose work was making an impact on society.
“We are here to recognise some Cameroonians and institutions that have been impacting society,” he said.
The association’s event Chairman, Sir Dr Ntumfor Barrister Nico Halle, also commended CENPA for the integrity of its selection process, saying the association had undertaken a thorough process in choosing the recipients.
The recognition of Mayor Fongu Cletus comes as Bamenda III Council continues to pursue projects in water supply, roads, drainage, bridges, markets and other community services.
Recent procurement notices published by the Public Contracts Regulatory Agency show that the council is moving ahead with several PROLOG-funded water projects. These include a water catchment at Nterikoh Up Town with four stand taps, a reservoir and water extension to parts of Lower Menteh. Other projects provide for solar-powered boreholes and water extensions in Ntambre II and Ntene Ntene.
Road and drainage works are also part of the programme. The council has launched procurement for the maintenance of roads in Ntenefor 2, including sections linking New Life, Foncha and Chick Junction, as well as the rehabilitation of the 1.8-kilometre Upper Bujong–Lower Bujong road. Another project covers stone masonry gutters along Ntambang Road and maintenance of the Banji Street–Tamutam Street route in Alahlie.
The council is also pursuing bridge infrastructure, including a reinforced concrete bridge linking Village II to GTHS Bamenda and another at Nkee Membang in Upper Menteh.
These interventions build on other recent activities in the municipality, including the operationalisation of Ntasen Market, the reception of a new two-classroom block and the council’s inclusive youth programmes.
More than 200 young people, including youths with disabilities, participated in the council’s 2026 holiday job programme, undertaking activities such as street cleaning, gutter clearing and public-space beautification. The council has also received six three-wheeled waste-collection tricycles intended to improve sanitation, particularly in hard-to-reach areas.
The municipality has at the same time been pursuing administrative reforms. Its digital civil status registration system is designed to move birth, marriage and death registration away from the traditional paper-based process, while a purpose-built civil status centre provides space for the new system.
The recent programme of the council has therefore combined physical infrastructure with municipal services and youth engagement.
For CENPA, these activities formed the basis for recognising Mayor Fongu Cletus as the Best North West Mayor at its 2026 awards. The recognition places the Bamenda III Mayor among individuals and institutions honoured by the association for contributions to society.
CENPA President Ngah Christian said the association would continue to recognise work that produces visible benefits for communities while strengthening its own programmes for journalists and the media.
