Sylvie Bantar adds climate reporting award to Labour Day distinction in two months

For journalists, recognition often comes as a reflection of years of dedication, consistency and service to the public. For CRTV North West journalist Sylvie Bantar, the months of May and June 2026 have brought two major distinctions celebrating both her professional commitment and contribution to environmental journalism.

Barely a month after emerging as the Best Worker in the Senior Level Staff category during Labour Day celebrations organised by the Cameroon Radio Television (CRTV) in Yaoundé, Sylvie Bantar added another accolade to her growing profile, receiving the 2025 Cameroon Media Award of Excellence Nation Builders Award for Audacity and Resilience in Media Reporting.

The award was presented by the Cameroon Climate Journalism Network (CCJN) during activities commemorating the 54th World Environment Day in Bamenda on June 5, 2026.

The event, organised under the theme, "Inspired by Nature, for Climate, for Our Future," brought together journalists, environmental advocates, development actors and educators committed to advancing climate awareness and environmental sustainability in Cameroon.

The ceremony also featured the launch of the Cameroon Climate Ecology Mantra (CCEM), a 64-page climate and nature study handbook designed for colleges and universities. According to organisers, the publication aligns with UNESCO's Greening Education Programme and seeks to promote climate literacy among young Cameroonians.

Speaking during the event, Chief Executive Officer of World Echoes Media Group, Tamukong Roland, described the initiative as part of efforts to strengthen climate education and encourage collective action against climate change through what he termed a "Cameroon Climate Generational Revival Action Programme."

According to Sylvie Bantar, the distinction highlights the growing importance of environmental journalism in informing communities and driving action on climate-related challenges.

"On this World Environment Day, I am elated to receive the 2025 Cameroon Media Award of Excellence – Nation Builders Award for Audacity and Resilience in Media Reporting," she stated on   her Facebook page.

She noted that the recognition celebrates her commitment to environmental and climate change reporting through CRTV North West and reinforces the role of journalism in raising awareness on one of the most pressing global challenges.

Sylvie Bantar also commended the efforts of the Cameroon Climate Journalism Network for advancing climate action advocacy, promoting environmental education and supporting initiatives aimed at integrating climate change studies into the educational curriculum.

"This award strengthens my resolve to continue telling impactful stories that inform communities, influence positive change and contribute to a more sustainable future for Cameroon and the world," she said.

The climate reporting distinction comes on the heels of another significant achievement recorded on May 1, 2026, during Labour Day celebrations in Yaoundé, where Bantar was awarded First Prize in the Senior Level Staff category for Best Worker.

Reacting to the award, she expressed gratitude to CRTV management for recognising dedication and professionalism in the workplace.

She added that the distinction would further strengthen her commitment to professionalism, public service and the continuous pursuit of quality journalism.

The back-to-back honours place Bantar among journalists whose work continues to demonstrate the growing role of the media not only in informing the public but also in shaping conversations around development, environmental protection and social change.

As Cameroon grapples with climate and environmental challenges, it is certain that journalists who consistently report on these issues play a critical role in amplifying community voices, promoting accountability and encouraging practical solutions for a sustainable future.
