The North West Regional Chairman of the Social Democratic Front, SDF, and Mayor of Bamenda III Council, Fongu Cletus Tanwe, has described the late Ni John Fru Ndi as a statesman whose legacy continues to inspire the party and Cameroon at large.
Speaking during a thanksgiving service held at the Presbyterian Church Musang in Bamenda to commemorate the life and legacy of the SDF founding chairman, Mayor Fongu Cletus said the gathering provided an opportunity to reflect on the values that defined Fru Ndi's life and leadership.
The thanksgiving service brought together members of the Fru Ndi family, SDF national and regional officials, government authorities, clergy, supporters and well-wishers in remembrance of the opposition icon who passed away in June 2023.
Reacting after the service, Mayor Fongu described Fru Ndi as a man whose impact transcended politics.
"We are here to celebrate a man who was a man of integrity, who was a statesman and who was a man that impacted Cameroonians," he said.
The regional SDF chairman further hailed Fru Ndi's contribution to the country's democratic evolution, describing him as a pioneer of political pluralism and democratic expression in Cameroon.
"He was the father of democracy in Cameroon and the father of the SDF in this country. We are here to celebrate his life because his legacy lives on," Fongu stated.
According to him, the commemoration was not only about remembering the late opposition leader but also about drawing lessons from his vision and commitment to public service.
He noted that the gathering served as a moment of reflection for party members and supporters to assess how best they can preserve and advance the ideals championed by the late leader.
"This is a moment for us to reflect and see how we can uphold his legacy and make sure that the SDF conquers as a vision, his vision," he added.
Throughout the thanksgiving service, speakers repeatedly highlighted Fru Ndi's commitment to democracy, integrity, social justice and service to humanity. Clergy challenged leaders and citizens alike to embrace selfless service, while family members called for the preservation of the values and principles that guided his life.
More than three years after his passing, Ni John Fru Ndi remains one of the most influential political figures in Cameroon's contemporary history, with many supporters viewing the anniversary commemoration as both a tribute to his accomplishments and a call to continue pursuing the ideals for which he stood.
