BBH appoints Dr Eugene Cleek head of surgery

Banso Baptist Hospital (BBH) in Kumbo has officially received and decorated American surgeon Dr Eugene Cleek as its new Head of Surgery, in a move hospital authorities say reflects both continuity and renewed international medical partnership within the Cameroon Baptist Convention Health Services (CBCHS).

The appointment was formally announced in May 2026 during a chapel service by Dr Beri Ngong.

Dr Eugene Cleek, widely known among staff simply as “Dr Cleek”, is a former long serving surgeon at BBH who has maintained strong ties with the institution over the years. Even during periods of instability in the North West region, he continued to visit the hospital and support clinical operations.

His contribution has included significant material and logistical support, most notably the donation of a 40 foot container of medical equipment, pharmaceuticals and consumables. Hospital records indicate the shipment arrived safely in Cameroon on 27 April 2026, further strengthening operational capacity at BBH.

Hospital authorities describe his appointment as a strategic and symbolic boost for CBCHS, with expectations that it will help attract additional missionary engagement and technical support to facilities across the network.

During a brief ceremony at BBH, staff representatives honoured Dr Eugene Cleek by dressing him in traditional Nso attire, a gesture reflecting deep appreciation for his long standing commitment to the hospital and the community it serves.

Speaking to the press, Dr Cleek expressed gratitude to hospital staff for their continued focus on the mission and values of CBCHS. He pledged to remain actively involved in supporting BBH through regular visits and continued medical assistance.

“I am grateful for the dedication of the staff and their commitment to the mission of healing and service,” he said in remarks shared with reporters. “I will continue to support the hospital and return whenever I am needed.”

His appointment comes at a time when mission hospitals in the region continue to rely on a blend of local resilience and international partnerships to sustain specialised care, particularly in surgery and emergency medicine.

According to BBH, leadership stability in the surgical unit is expected to play a critical role in maintaining service delivery while reinforcing its position as a referral facility within CBCHS.
