The Bamenda airport has successfully completed a critical test flight, marking a major step in preparations for the April 2026 papal visit to Cameroon.
The test was designed to assess the airport’s readiness to receive an aircraft of international standard, particularly the papal plane expected to land in Bamenda as part of the Pope’s itinerary.
According to officials, the operation was completed without incident, confirming the functionality of key infrastructure such as the runway, navigation systems and ground handling operations. Security arrangements and coordination frameworks were also put to the test and validated.
The successful trial comes amid intensified national preparations for the Apostolic journey scheduled from 15 to 18 April, during which the Pope is expected to visit Yaoundé, Bamenda and Douala.
Authorities say the outcome of the exercise provides assurance that Bamenda can meet the logistical and security demands of hosting a global religious figure like the Pope, particularly in a region that has faced prolonged socio-political challenges.
Beyond its technical success, the test flight carries symbolic weight, reinforcing the region’s readiness to welcome the Pope and positioning Bamenda as a central stop in a visit expected to focus on peace, reconciliation and national unity.
Officials expressed confidence that all required standards have been met, noting that the airport is now fully prepared to handle the expected influx of high-level delegations and international attention.
As final preparations continue, the successful test flight highlights both the operational readiness and the broader significance of Bamenda’s role in what is shaping up to be a historic moment for Cameroon.
