Vatican appoints priest and academic John Berinyuy Tata to support pastoral leadership in Cameroon’s North West.

The Holy See has announced the appointment of Monsignor John Berinyuy Tata as auxiliary bishop of the metropolitan  Archdiocese of Bamenda. The decision was made by Pope Leo XIV and published Friday by the Vatican press office.

Monsignor John Berinyuy Tata

Until his appointment, Bishop-elect
John Berinyuy Tata served as rector of the Catholic University of Cameroon in Bamenda, where he has been widely known for his academic leadership and pastoral engagement.

Born on 18 December 1975 in Mbuluf-Shisong in the Diocese of Kumbo, John Berinyuy Tata pursued his priestly formation in philosophy and theology at the Saint Thomas Aquinas Interdiocesan Major Seminary in Bambui. He was ordained a priest on 30 March 2005.

His early ministry included service as parish vicar of Saint Joseph in Bafut from 2005 to 2006, followed by four years as parish priest of Saint Patrick in Babanki-Tungo.

He later specialised in spirituality at the Dominican monastery in Bambui and earned a doctorate in theology with a focus on Christian anthropology from the Pontifical Theological Faculty Teresianum in Rome.

Beyond parish work, he has served as spiritual director and lecturer at Saint Thomas Aquinas Major Seminary, chaplain of the diocesan Charismatic Movement, and most recently as university rector.

The appointment comes as the Bamenda archdiocese continues to navigate pastoral demands in a region marked by social and security challenges. An auxiliary bishop assists the archbishop in administrative and pastoral duties, helping to strengthen outreach, clergy support, and diocesan governance.
