Hon. Pierre Kwemo urges Constitutional Council to uphold impartiality in Presidential Election disputes

The National President of the Union of Socialist Movements (UMS), Honourable Pierre Kwemo, has expressed solidarity with political actors whose candidacies have been invalidated by Elections Cameroon (ELECAM) in the ongoing presidential election process.

In a statement issued on 31 July 2025, Hon Pierre Kwemo acknowledged the courage of political parties, movements and independent personalities who, despite operating in what he described as a “hostile institutional and political environment,” chose to take part in the democratic contest. He said their bravery deserves recognition and their commitment to national democratic life must be valued.

Against the backdrop of mounting discontent over the disqualification decisions, the UMS leader called on state institutions to act responsibly. He specifically urged the Constitutional Council, the body charged with safeguarding the rule of law to remain steadfast in its mission, resist any form of pressure, and adjudicate cases “in accordance with the law, the whole law, and nothing but the law.”

“The Republic must not be the negation of rights, but their guarantee,” Kwemo declared, inviting all disqualified candidates to trust in the wisdom of the Council as it reviews appeals.

Reaffirming his belief in the strength of the law and the virtues of republican debate, the outspoken politician insisted that the truth of facts and legal texts should prevail over “all subjectivities.” He renewed his commitment to building a just Cameroon, respectful of its laws and fostering a peaceful democratic future.

The UMS, a legally recognised political party since 2011, will participate in the October 2025 presidential elections. The Constitutional Council is expected to deliver rulings on the ongoing appeals in the coming days.
