The Constitutional Council yesterday wrapped up a marathon day of pre-election hearings, ruling on 21 petitions as Cameroon moves closer to the 12 October presidential election. The session, chaired by Council President Clément Atangana at the Palais des Congrès in Yaoundé, stretched late into the evening before adjourning.
Constitutional CouncilAccording to official figures, the Council decided 21 cases, postponed one, placed another under deliberation, and left 10 still awaiting the opening of debates. Most petitions whether from political parties or independent candidates were dismissed or declared inadmissible, including challenges to candidate eligibility and procedural disputes over Elections Cameroon (ELECAM) decisions.
One of the most closely watched matters which is the case pitting Professor Maurice Kamto and the MANIDEM party against ELECAM and the Ministry of Territorial Administration (MINAT) is set for a ruling this afternoon, Tuesday 5, at 3:00 p.m. The matter was delayed yesterday after a procedural dispute over whether Kamto’s petition should be merged with that of fellow MANIDEM-affiliated candidate Dieudonné Yebga.
