Prominent lawyer and human rights advocate Nkongho Felix Agbor, widely known as Agbor Balla, has issued a rallying call for Cameroon’s opposition forces to unite behind a single consensus candidate in the wake of Professor Maurice Kamto’s exclusion from the 2025 presidential race.
In a strongly worded statement released today, Agbor Balla described Kamto’s disqualification as “a calculated attempt to weaken the democratic process, destabilise the opposition, and demoralise the millions of citizens who are hungry for genuine change.”
He warned that the moment represented a critical crossroads for the country and urged opposition leaders to rise above personal ambition.
“Now is the time to build unity, not fragmentation. To forge consensus, not rivalry. To present one strong candidate, not a divided front,” he said.
Agbor Balla stressed that a fragmented opposition would only strengthen those seeking to maintain the status quo. In contrast, he argued, a united opposition could “give power back to the people” and “send a clear message: We are ready to lead.”
Calling for urgent consultations among opposition leaders, party heads, and civil society voices, he urged them to “consult, compromise, and act” before it was too late.
“Cameroon is bigger than any one person. Our children are watching. Our future is on the line. Let us unite. Let us lead. Let us win – together,” he concluded.
The call comes amid heightened political tensions as the Constitutional Council continues to rule on pre-election disputes, with the final list of candidates for the 12 October presidential poll expected soon.
