Presidential hopeful Akere Muna warns against erosion of public trust after Prof Kamto’s candidacy rejection

Presidential hopeful and former Bar Council President, Akere Muna, has voiced strong concern over the rejection of Professor Maurice Kamto’s bid for the 12 October 2025 presidential election, warning that both the reality and perception of justice are at stake.

In a statement published on his official Facebook page, Muna described the exclusion of Kamto along with several other aspirants as based on reasons that “neither correspond to the established facts nor comply with the provisions of Article 121 of the Electoral Code.” He drew particular attention to Article 5(2), which prohibits members of Elections Cameroon from receiving instructions from any national or foreign authority, public or private.

Quoting the renowned legal maxim, “Justice must not only be done, it must also be seen to be done,” Muna stressed that fairness in electoral adjudication must extend beyond legal correctness to visible impartiality. He cited the landmark English case R v Sussex Justices, ex parte McCarthy, which established that even the appearance of bias can undermine public confidence in the judiciary.

“The Constitutional Council must fully appreciate the gravity of the issues at stake. It must act with diligence to ensure justice that is impartial, transparent, and worthy of the trust of all citizens.” he said

Muna’s remarks come as the Constitutional Council begins hearing appeals from candidates disqualified by Elections Cameroon, a process seen as critical in shaping the credibility of the country’s upcoming presidential poll.
