CAMGEW Cameroon Awards Leading NW Environmental Protection Reporters

Cameroon Gender and Environment Watch (CAMGEW) has celebrated the efforts of journalists and related media professionals in the North West Region of Cameroon with its awards focused on environmental protection. The awards ceremony took place on Saturday, May 4, 2024, during the CJTU NW 2024 Awards Café in Bamenda, organized by the Cameroon Journalists' Trade Union (CJTU) North West Chapter.
Five outstanding journalists were recognized for their reporting on environmental conservation and protection in line with the theme for World Press Freedom Day 2024: "The Press for the Planet: Journalism in the Face of the Environmental Crisis."

According to the Executive Director of CAMGEW, Wirsiy Emmanuel, the Awards were to encourage journalists to prioritize environmental reporting during these critical times.

The winners from amongst 12 who submitted articles for the awards were announced by Choves Loh, President of the Jury, who highlighted their exceptional contributions:

Orla Tita Nki of CRTV North West, was recognized for her continuous efforts in raising awareness about environmental protection through CRTV Bamenda's Morning "Wake Up Crew" program.

Bakah Derick of Hilltopvoices Communications Group Ltd, awarded for his insightful news report examining Bamenda's waste problems and shedding light on the absence of immediate solutions.

Ngong Song Jean Marie, stringer for DW in Bamenda, was honoured for his news story showcasing the innovative approach of a 12-year-old in Douala who crafts chairs from plastic waste.

Ignatius Nji of Eden Newspaper received recognition for his investigative piece published in Eden Newspaper, titled "The Clash of Interest and Smear Campaign in the Management of Waste in Bamenda."

While Mboh Promise, whose news story published in The Guardian Post highlighted CAMGEW's exemplary leadership in engaging stakeholders for nature protection.

Each laureate received certificates and one-terabyte storage devices to further support their journalistic endeavors.

President of CJTU Nji Ignatius expressed gratitude to CAMGEW for their support and called for the Environmental Protection Award to become an annual event. He emphasized the importance of encouraging more journalists in the region to engage in environmental reporting to address pressing environmental challenges.
