CJTU West Launches World Press Freedom Day Activities in Dschang

The West regional chapter of Cameroon Journalists' Trade Union (CJTU) on Thursday 11 April 2024 embarked on a significant visit to Dschang. Their mission was twofold: to officially kickstart activities related to the 31st edition of World Press Freedom Day in the West region and to introduce Corine Kamessong, the CJTU focal point for Menoua, to administrative, judicial, and municipal authorities.
The delegation made stops at various administrative institutions, including the Divisional Officer, sub-divisional officer, Menoua gendarmerie company cammand, Dschang municipal council, as well as the presidents of the Courts of First Instance and High Court of Menoua, and the public Prosecutor's office.

At each level, the CJTU West Regional president introduced bureau members and the new focal point, elucidating the Union's missions to the officials. Each official received documents relating to the elective General Assembly of April 7, 2022, held in the conference hall of the West Region Governor.
Local authorities commended CJTU's initiative to bridge the gap between the media and the administration, emphasizing the importance of fostering a responsible press that informs and educates the populace. They pledged full support to facilitate access to information and urged media practitioners to uphold ethical standards. Corine Kamessong's mandate includes rallying Menoua colleagues in a spirit of active solidarity.

A registration file has been opened to identify all individuals working in the field, with plans to recruit new members announced. The conclusion of these activities in the Menoua Division was met with satisfaction from the regional president and accompanying bureau members.
CJTU's efforts underscore the importance of press freedom and collaboration between media professionals and authorities in Cameroon's West region, promising a brighter future for journalism and information dissemination.
