The Holy See has unveiled the official programme for the apostolic journey of Pope Leo XIV to Africa, placing Bamenda at the centre of what is widely interpreted as a strong pastoral push for peace and reconciliation in Cameroon.

While the Pontiff’s visit from 15 to 18 April 2026 includes engagements in Yaoundé and Douala, the schedule dedicates a full day to Bamenda in the North West Region, where the Pope will meet communities affected by years of tension and deliver what many expect to be a defining message on dialogue and national healing.

According to the programme released by the Vatican, the Pope will arrive in Yaoundé on Wednesday 15 April after departing from Algiers. His arrival at Yaoundé–Nsimalen International Airport will be followed by a welcome ceremony and a courtesy visit to Paul Biya at the Unity Palace.

The Pontiff will also meet government authorities, civil society representatives and members of the diplomatic corps at the Yaoundé Conference Centre before visiting the Ngul Zamba Orphanage. The day will conclude with a private meeting with bishops of Cameroon at the headquarters of the National Episcopal Conference.

Attention, however, is expected to shift sharply to Bamenda the following day. On Thursday 16 April, the Pope will depart Yaoundé for Bamenda where he will preside over a Meeting for Peace with the Community of Bamenda at the Saint Joseph's Metropolitan Cathedral.

The encounter is expected to bring together clergy, community leaders and representatives of the population in what observers see as one of the most symbolic engagements of the visit. By convening the meeting in Bamenda, the Vatican appears to be using the moral authority of the papacy to reinforce calls for dialogue and reconciliation in the troubled region.

Later that afternoon the Pontiff will celebrate a public Holy Mass at the Bamenda International Airport, an event expected to gather thousands of faithful from across the North West and neighbouring regions.

A papal presence in Bamenda places global attention on the search for peace in the region and could strengthen the role of faith leaders and civil society actors advocating dialogue and community rebuilding.

The visit will then move to Douala on Friday 17 April where the Pope will celebrate Mass at Japoma Stadium before paying a private visit to Saint Paul Catholic Hospital. Later in the day he will engage university students and professors at the Catholic University of Central Africa.

The Cameroon leg of the apostolic journey will conclude on Saturday 18 April with a final Mass at Yaoundé-City Airport and a farewell ceremony before the Pope departs for Luanda.

By placing a peace meeting and major public Mass in Bamenda at the heart of the visit, the Vatican is positioning the papal journey as a moral intervention aimed at encouraging reconciliation, restoring hope and renewing national commitment to dialogue.
