As communities across the world observe Breast Cancer Awareness Month throughout October, Cameroon Women in Action Society (CAWAS) joined the global effort through a local campaign aimed at galvanising women towards early detection and breast health-care.
In partnership with Save the Community and the medical staff of St. Blaise Hospital, CAWAS distributed educational flyers and pink ribbons to nearly 1,000 women in market and community settings, urging them to prioritise breast health and undergo screenings at both St. Blaise and the Regional Hospital.
The public-outreach activity focused on sensitising women around a food-market precinct, where volunteers engaged with the community about breast-cancer risk factors, symptoms and the critical importance of early diagnosis. The initiative supports the month-long “pink” campaign, whose theme this year is “Every story is unique, Every journey matters.”
CAWAS CEO Leinyuy Saber Emelienne thanked Save the Community for funding the drive and lauded the teams from St. Blaise and CAWAS for their hands-on work, both at tables and on-the-ground. “We aimed not just to hand out ribbons, but to spark conversations and guide women into action,” she said.
The campaign aligns with global health efforts. According to the World Health Organization breast cancer remains the most-commonly diagnosed cancer among women and earlier detection markedly improves outcomes. “Where a woman lives should not determine whether she survives,” the WHO states, urging awareness, screening and equitable access worldwide.
With the local drive now complete, CAWAS says it will follow up by connecting women with screening services and monitoring participation rates.
“Our message is simple, know your body, ask the questions, act quickly when something changes and let no one walk the breast-cancer journey alone.” Leinyuy Saber Emelienne said
