With just hours to the close of candidacy submissions for Cameroon’s 12 October 2025 presidential election, Elections Cameroon (ELECAM) has reported a remarkable surge in numbers, announcing that 65 individuals have filed to contest for the nation’s highest office.
Most of the latest entrants, whose files have been received late this evening of Monday 21 July, are independent hopefuls or representatives of relatively unknown political parties. The late-hour rush has added to what is shaping up to be a highly competitive and unusually crowded presidential race.
This final-day influx has notably featured few recognisable names among the fresh submissions, indicating a shift from earlier days when prominent political figures and party leaders had already filed their candidacies. Among those earlier submissions are familiar national figures whose participation in the election has been well publicised.
As of this evening, the ELECAM commissions across regional and central offices were still receiving candidates an indication the number may increaseas before midnight.
Political commentators suggest that the surge may reflect growing public interest in national leadership, but also caution that such a large and fragmented candidate list could complicate voter decision-making and dilute campaign messaging.
ELECAM has reassured the public that all submitted files will undergo a thorough verification process, after which the final, validated list of candidates will be officially published.
As the clock ticks closer to midnight, attention now turns to the final tally and to what promises to be one of the most open and unpredictable presidential contests in Cameroon’s history.
