Bamenda will on Tuesday, June 30, host the launch of a new book chronicling the historic peace accord between the fondoms of Mankon and Bali, a diplomatic legacy that has endured for generations and continues to offer valuable lessons for peacebuilding in Africa.
Written by Tah Azinue Ngufor and Bro Langmia N. Oliver, the book examines the indigenous diplomatic covenant associated with Ngwadkan (Ngwarikang), whose intervention is credited with fostering a lasting peace between the neighbouring fondoms of Bali Nyonga and Mankon. The authors argue that the story represents one of Africa's overlooked models of diplomacy, dialogue and conflict resolution.
Beyond recounting a historical episode, the publication explores broader themes of African identity, leadership, resilience, healing and transformation. It reflects on the untapped potential of African communities and the many stories of courage and wisdom that have remained largely absent from mainstream historical narratives.
The work carries a foreword by His Royal Majesty Fon Angwafo IV Fru-Asah of Mankon and a recommendation by His Royal Majesty Fon Doh Ganyonga III of Bali, underscoring the historical significance of the covenant and the continued commitment of both traditional institutions to preserving their shared legacy.
Organisers say the tribute gathering is intended not only to celebrate the publication but also to rekindle public appreciation of indigenous African diplomacy and its relevance to contemporary society.
The event is expected to attract traditional authorities, academics, religious leaders, peace practitioners, youths, civil society organisations and cultural enthusiasts from across the region. Participants will also have the opportunity to interact with the authors and discuss the historical and contemporary relevance of the Mankon-Bali peace accord.
According to the organisers, the gathering seeks to remind Africans that many of the continent's enduring solutions to conflict, leadership and community cohesion are rooted in indigenous knowledge systems that deserve greater recognition and documentation.
The launch has received the royal blessings of both paramount rulers, who have encouraged support for the initiative as a contribution to preserving an important chapter of Cameroon's cultural and diplomatic heritage.
In addition to the book presentation, organisations, businesses, educational institutions, cooperatives, religious bodies and individuals whose missions promote peace, diplomacy, leadership, unity and community development have been invited to partner with the initiative. Partners will be recognised during the event while contributing to the promotion and wider dissemination of the publication.
As conversations on peacebuilding and reconciliation continue across Cameroon and the African continent, the authors hope the story of the Mankon-Bali peace accord will inspire renewed appreciation for indigenous approaches to diplomacy and the enduring values of dialogue, mutual respect and coexistence.
