The Presbyterian Church in Cameroon (PCC) is mourning the passing of one of its most revered spiritual leaders, the Very Reverend Dr. Festus Ambe Asana, whose decades of service helped shape generations of ministers and believers within the church and beyond.
The PCC officially announced that the former Moderator passed away on Monday, June 22, 2026, in Orlando, Florida, United States. The announcement was made by the current Moderator, Rt. Rev. Miki Hans Abia, through the PCC News Portal, where he extended condolences to the biological family, the Christian family and all who were touched by the late church leader's ministry.
The passing of Dr. Asana marks the departure of a devoted servant of God whose life was defined by faith, humility, scholarship and an unwavering commitment to the mission of the Church.
Dr. Festus Asana's journey in ministry spanned several decades, during which he served the Presbyterian Church in Cameroon in various capacities. Whether as pastor, theologian, educator, administrator or Moderator, he remained committed to advancing the Gospel and strengthening the spiritual life of the church.
One of the most significant chapters of his ministry was his service as Dean of the Presbyterian Theological College (PTC) in Kumba from the mid-1980s to the late 1990s. During this period, he played a central role in the formation of future pastors and church leaders, helping to prepare men and women for ministry across Cameroon and beyond.
Former students and colleagues often describe him as a gifted teacher who combined academic excellence with pastoral care, encouraging young ministers to pursue both theological depth and spiritual maturity.
His passion for theological education reflected his belief that a strong church is built upon faithful teaching, sound doctrine and servant leadership.
After years of service in church administration, including a decade as Synod Clerk from 1999 to 2009, Dr. Festus Asana was elected the fifth Moderator of the Presbyterian Church in Cameroon.
He was inducted into office on February 28, 2010, succeeding the Rev. Dr. Nyansako-ni-Nku and assuming responsibility as the spiritual head of one of the largest Protestant denominations in Cameroon.
As Moderator, he provided leadership during a period of growth and transformation within the church. His ministry was characterised by a deep commitment to unity, evangelism, education and the strengthening of church institutions.
Those who worked closely with him recall a leader who approached his responsibilities with prayerfulness, wisdom and a profound sense of duty to God and His people.
At the end of his mandate in 2014, he handed over leadership after one term, leaving behind a legacy of faithful stewardship and service.
Among the achievements associated with Dr. Asana's leadership was his role in supporting the establishment and growth of Cameroon Christian University (CCU) in Bali.
The project reflected his conviction that Christian education remains a vital instrument for shaping future generations and contributing to national development. Under his leadership, the vision of a university grounded in Christian values moved from aspiration to reality.
Today, the institution stands as part of his contribution to the church's educational mission.
Throughout his ministry, Dr. Asana remained a strong advocate for investing in people, believing that education, discipleship and spiritual formation were essential pillars for the future of both church and society.
Beyond the offices he held and the institutions he helped build, many remember Dr. Festus Asana for his personal ministry and pastoral influence.
He was known as a mentor, counsellor and spiritual father to countless pastors, elders and church members. His sermons, teachings and counsel touched lives across generations, while his calm disposition and wisdom earned him respect throughout the Presbyterian community.
Even after retirement from active leadership, he remained a respected elder statesman whose prayers, guidance and encouragement continued to inspire many.
His passing leaves a deep sense of loss within the Presbyterian Church in Cameroon, yet it also offers an opportunity to celebrate a life that was spent in service to God and humanity.
The Very Reverend Dr. Festus Ambe Asana is survived by his wife, Ma Jennie Asana, and their children.
Though he has departed from this earthly life, the seeds he planted through ministry, education and spiritual mentorship will continue to bear fruit for generations to come.
As the church mourns, it does so with the hope and assurance of the Christian faith, giving thanks for a servant who fought the good fight, finished the race and kept the faith.
