The Cameroon People’s Democratic Movement (CPDM) has officially launched campaigns in Bamenda ahead of the 12 October presidential election, with party leaders urging voters to back the party’s candidate President Paul Biya on the grounds of experience, stability and promises of improved living standards.
CPDM militants at the congress hallAt the regional campaign launch on Saturday 27 September 2025, held at the party house in Bamenda, former Prime Minister and North West regional campaign Coordinator Philemon Yang told militants and sympathisers that the CPDM candidate remains “the most qualified” of the 12 contenders in the race.
Yang dismissed criticism of President Biya’s age, arguing instead that competence, vision and experience should guide voters’ choice.
Top CPDM party officials at the launch“We are not here to talk about age, we are here to talk about qualities, competences and abilities,” he said, adding that “criticising a president is not a project, is not a plan, is not selling us a dream.”
For ordinary citizens grappling with daily challenges, Yang emphasised that Biya’s leadership has delivered concrete achievements and pledged further progress in areas such as infrastructure, education, and economic growth. He cited planned improvements in roads, railways and airports as critical for boosting trade and easing movement within and beyond the region.
On the cost of living, Yang assured supporters that President Biya’s next mandate would focus on improving purchasing power.
Militants pledged support for Paul Biya“These are the things that will help make Cameroon great, like countries such as Singapore, South Korea, Malaysia and China,” he said.
The former Prime Minister also highlighted Biya’s record on peace and unity, recalling how past disputes with neighbouring Nigeria were resolved through dialogue. He stressed that maintaining stability was vital for rebuilding the conflict-affected North West and South West regions.
Women and young people were presented as central to the CPDM’s vision. Yang pointed to efforts to empower women in leadership and invest in youth as key to the country’s future.
“The future of this country lies with the young people who will bring about change,” he told the cheering crowd.
Felix Mbayu Head of Mezam Divisional Campaign Committee, host of the campaign launch eventHe further urged Cameroonians to adopt what he described as the “four Ps” standing for passion for the nation, perseverance in development, persistence in pursuing progress, and patience to build a great country over time.
The gathering ended with militants pledging their unflinching support for President Biya’s re-election bid. The CPDM campaign will now move into the 34 council areas of the North West Region before extending nationwide in the run-up to polling day.
President Biya, who has been in power since 1982, faces 11 other candidates in the October election.
