Youngest candidate emerges in final hours as 26-year-old student joins presidential race

As the race towards Cameroon’s 12 October presidential election accelerates into its final hours, Mohamadou Laminou Adamou, a 26-year-old student at the University of Ngaoundéré, has officially submitted his candidacy file as an independent contender. ELECAM is yet to report his candidacy file reception officially.

Originally from Mbé in the Adamawa Region, Laminou positions himself as the face of youthful ambition and renewal. Declaring himself “the candidate of the break”, he says he intends to demystify the presidency and challenge the entrenched myths surrounding high office in Cameroon.

“My generation has ideas, courage, and the moral clarity to break with the past,” Laminou told reporters shortly after filing. His proposed leadership style is rooted in what he calls a “regenerative approach to governance”, aimed at restoring public trust and reinvigorating national institutions.

If validated by ELECAM, Laminou would be the youngest candidate in the country’s electoral history. His appearance adds a striking dimension to a race that has now attracted more than 75 hopefuls, as the filing deadline approaches midnight.

This development is yet another signal of a shifting political landscape where youth voices and independent actors are asserting themselves more boldly.

ELECAM is expected to release the provisional list of accepted candidates in the days ahead.
