President Paul Biya has officially submitted his candidacy for the 12 October 2025 presidential election, seeking another term in office after more than four decades at the helm of the Cameroonian state.
The candidacy file was submitted at 13:08 GMT on Thursday 17 July at the headquarters of Elections Cameroon (ELECAM) in Yaoundé, by Jean Nkuete, Secretary General of the Central Committee of the ruling Cameroon People’s Democratic Movement (CPDM/RDPC), and Samuel Mvondo Ayolo, Minister and Director of the Civil Cabinet at the Presidency of the Republic.
Following the submission, both senior officials proceeded to the Constitutional Council to file a copy of the documents, in line with the electoral process.
The act formalises President Biya’s long-anticipated participation in the upcoming election, which he had announced earlier this week via his official Meta (Facebook) page, stating:
“I am a candidate in the 12 October 2025 presidential election. Rest assured that my determination to serve you is equal to the magnitude of the challenges we face. Together, there is no obstacle we cannot overcome.”
At 92 years old, Biya’s candidacy has already sparked widespread debate across political, civil, and international circles. He is currently one of Africa’s longest-serving heads of state, having led Cameroon since 1982.
The deadline for the submission of candidacies remains 21 July 2025, after which ELECAM and the Constitutional Council will begin reviewing the eligibility of all aspirants ahead of the publication of the official list.
