After emerging victorious at the 2013 municipal elections in Bamenda I Subdivision sanctioned by the taking over of the Council from the Social Democratic Front SDF, the Cameroon People Democratic Movement CPDM recently has made moves that signal danger for Fru Ndi’s Party in Bamenda III.
The September 19, 2014 “Fon’s Salute” event which turned out to be a welcome event for the Paramount Fon of Nkwen HM SF Azehfor III has been described by some local politicians as the takeoff on the “operation take Bamenda III” journey.
As the dust of this “Fon’s Salute” event settled, the Paramount Fon of Nkwen November 6, 2014 at the Bamenda Congress Hall reiterated his position as a disciple of the “fire Party” the CPDM. The event was the 32nd anniversary of Paul’s Biya’s accession to power which made clearer the political affiliation of the Fon and the aspirations of the CPDM in Mezam.
Fon Azehfor III addressing CPDM militants
Without mincing words Fon Azehfor III authoritatively declared that the wind of change has come to Nkwen and so shall it be.  This was received with an applause indicating affirmation from both authorities and militants of the CPDM. As if to say this was not enough, the wife of late and SDF pioneer Mayor of Bamenda III, Rose Amandou was received in grand style with CPDM party uniform decoration by visibly satisfied Minister Paul Nji Atanga who is also section President for Mezam I.
These events may look small or personalities considered light weights, but the question is why Bamenda III? If the SDF in Bamenda sees these as small political moves, this reporter does not see it as such considering the time and distance away from the next municipal elections and other things that may surely happen between now and then.
After the SDF won the Bamenda I council in 2007, similar events took place crowned by the Appointment of the Government Delegate to the Bamenda City Council Vincent Nji who during the 2013 electoral consultations proved that he was on a political assignment. The hard campaign he mounted against the SDF and his candidates needs not be overemphasized. Mindful of the Fact that since the 2011 presidential elections there has been no cabinet reshuffle, noting stops the appointment of a Nkwen son or daughter not necessarily as Government Delegate but another juicy or lucrative function. Such an appointee will add to the Fon, then the likes of Ngante Martin Ngoh, to wage a war against the SDF. Since one can not make a difference between the Government and the ruling CPDM Party, other plans like clipping the wings of the SDF in Bamenda III by dismissing or arresting SDF loyalists in key functions like Dr Tamajong Elzebeth SDF secretary General who hails from Nkwen and currently Director for National education in the Ministry of Scientific Research and innovation, Fongu Cletus current Mayor of Bamenda III and many others cannot be completely cancelled. The addition of names into the electoral register in Bamenda III as was the case in Bamenda I is also another possibility. All the protest led by the SDF MP for Bamenda-Bali and the then Mayor for Bamenda I Acho Simon Ngwen yielded no fruits. Can the SDF in Bamenda III contain these moves? I doubt but they will have to keep watch before the unexpected happens. We will have to wait and see what will happen in 2018 as the law promises.
