Veteran journalist Chris Mbunwe, publisher of The Champion newspaper, former Bureau Chief of The Post Newspaper and pioneer president of the Cameroon Association of English-speaking Journalists, CAMASEJ, was laid to rest on Saturday, 25 April 2026, in Bamenda amid emotional tributes celebrating his contribution to journalism and community development.

Funeral activities began with the removal of his remains from the mortuary as family members, friends, colleagues and sympathisers gathered to accompany him on his final journey.

The lay-in-state took on a strong cultural tone as traditional dance groups from Mfuh and masquerades performed in honour of the late journalist, emphasising his deep ties to his Wimbum roots.

The media fraternity was prominent throughout the ceremony, paying tribute to a man widely credited with helping shape English-language journalism in Cameroon.

Representing CAMASEJ, Ambe MacMillian Awa, National Auditor and head of delegation mandated by National President Jude Viban, described Mbunwe as a foundational figure in the association who dedicated his life to advancing the welfare of journalists.

Colleagues from The Post Newspaper also paid tribute to their former longtime Bureau Chief, recalling his professionalism and commitment to balanced reporting.

Further tributes came from Ndefcam through the station Manger Emmanuella Maikem Radio where Chris Mbunwe volunteered and hosted programmes such as Where Are We, with speakers praising his passion for public discourse and community engagement.

Community organisations also honoured the late journalist for his leadership beyond the newsroom.

Members of the Tabeken Cultural and Development Association, TACUDA, and the Wimbum Cultural and Development Association, WICUDA, both paid glowing tributes, highlighting his service as president of both groups and his dedication to community development initiatives.

A funeral Mass was later celebrated at All Saints Parish Bayelle and presided over by Rev Fr Ndong Valentine, Parish Priest, who called on mourners to remain steadfast in faith while praying for the repose of Chris Mbunwe’s soul.

The burial also attracted notable political figures including Benjamin Fru Ndi son of SDF funding Chairman Ni John Fru Ndi, Lucas Ngu Afong SDF District chairman for Bamenda III and other members of the Social Democratic Front. Chris Mbunwe had covered the party extensively during his journalism career.

Many other friends, professional associates and community members were present, reflecting the broad impact of a man remembered for his fearless reporting, humility and commitment to service.

As his remains were finally lowered to rest, many described his passing as the end of a remarkable chapter in Cameroon’s media landscape, while his legacy continues through the generations of journalists and communities he served.
